Virtual learning used by three-quarters of employers

Live online learning technologies – such as virtual meetings and classrooms, and video-conferencing – are becoming increasingly popular, with more than three-quarters of employers using them in 2011.

This is according to the benchmark study carried out by learning-technology provider Towards Maturity, which found that e-learning courses were the most popular learning technology this year, used by 80% of employers.

Many organisations also used video to train workers. Nearly two-thirds (61%) used video-based content to aid learning this year, more than twice as many as in 2008, when it was used by 25%.

Top ten learning technologies 2011

  • E-learning courses – 80%.
  • Live online learning, including virtual meetings, virtual classrooms and video-conferencing – 77%.
  • Surveys and questionnaires – 77%.
  • Learning Management Systems – 71%.
  • Online assessment – 68%.
  • Video-based content – 61%.
  • Enterprise-wide information services – 54%.
  • Open education resources – 54%.
  • Learning portals – 47%.

Additionally, three-quarters (77%) of the 643 organisations that took part in the survey said that learning technologies would help them respond faster to changing business conditions, an increase of 11 percentage points since 2010.

The study predicts that the fastest growing learning technologies by 2013 will be custom-made e-learning, mobile learning, podcasting and in-house video content.

Laura Overton, managing director of Towards Maturity, commented: “Businesses have had repeatedly bad experiences of e-learning, often as a result of completing dull compliance courses.

“This is now changing and our in-depth study has highlighted how new ways of learning are making a significant difference to the skills that businesses really need to survive and thrive – from leadership development to getting new products out to market quicker. If businesses want to develop the right skills for growth, I urge them to learn from their peers and adopt the new ways of learning.”

Employers looking to adopt e-learning can find information and advice in Personnel Today’s Buyers’ Guide on the topic.
