Transport for London to take over Underground maintenance contract from Metronet

Transport for London (TfL) will take over the running of the failed Metronet Underground maintenance contract, bringing much needed security to former Metronet workers.

TfL was the only bidder for Metronet’s Tube line contract, according to administrators.

The news comes after months of uncertainty for maintenance workers, who in September went on strike for 30 hours as jobs could not be guaranteed.

Brian Harris, union Unite regional officer for the Tube, said: “TfL taking over the running of the Metronet Tube contract is great news for the former Metronet workers who have endured a long period of insecurity.

Harris added Unite wants the transfer of ownership to happen “as quickly as possible.”

Reports of a £1m payout to bosses of the failed rail network maintenance company angered unions less than two weeks ago.
