Google uses hiring slowdown to move staff around departments

Google is using the slower hiring period caused by the recession as a chance to move its people around departments to gain experience in different areas, Personnel Today has learned.

Liane Hornsey, people operations director at the search engine giant, said she was moving talent around to keep morale high, despite the company announcing 200 job cuts last month.

“We’re slowing down our hiring,” she said. “It is critical that we increase opportunities. I’m shaking the organisation up and deliberately moving people.”

Last week, Personnel Today’s sister organisation Celre and the Chartered Management Institute revealed HR had doubled the number of people they transferred internally to hold onto key skills.
