Momentum builds in UK financial services jobs market

by Personnel Today 6 Dec 2010
by Personnel Today 6 Dec 2010

Job opportunities in trading and quantitative analytics have surged by 30% or more over the last quarter according to the eFinancialCareers UK Quarterly Barometer.

And across 20 of the 21 UK financial market sectors tracked by the eFinancialCareers Quarterly Barometer, there has been an increase in recruitment activity. In the areas of capital markets, investment banking/M&A, consultancy, sales and marketing, and information technology, positions available have all strengthened by 20% or more for the quarter ended 30 October when compared to the preceding three months.

And when looking at the year on year trend for the month of October, of the 21 financial industry sectors reported on by the eFinancialCareers Barometer only one – private equity & venture capital – had retreated into negative territory, down just 5%. All other segments had grown by at least 23%.

Indeed, the two largest year-on-year gainers for the month of October recorded by the eFinancialCareers Barometer were capital markets and asset management. Positions available in both areas have broadly doubled when compared to October 2009 – a growth driven in the main by increased equity market activity.

James Bennett, Managing Director EMEA and APAC at eFinancialCareers.com, commented:

“Across the board, the eFinancialCareers UK Barometer shows the financial services sector making a solid recovery in terms of financial organisations wanting to expand their work-force. And whilst we can anticipate a seasonal slowing down in recruitment activity in November and December, the signals from the sector are that the hiring activity will continue in 2011. This will be driven by the combination of financial organisations having to rebuild their teams as their revenue levels grow, and the need for firms to expand their IT and back office functions as regulatory requirements increase.”
