The rise in the number of public sector employees must not continue, according to the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC). The BCC said it was of real concern to business that public sector employment jumped by 170,000 jobs last year while at the same time manufacturing jobs declined by 120,000. Receive the Personnel Today Direct e-newsletter every Wednesday BCC director general, David Frost, said there needed to be a rebalancing of the economy and the government needed to concentrate on re-invigorating industries such as manufacturing. “The government must never forget that without a strong wealth-creating sector, living standards for all of us will fall,” he said. “The government must improve the environment in which our businesses operate.”
