The chorus of the English National Opera (ENO) went on strike last week –
giving a free performance in protest.
The chorus started industrial action after the ENO’s management said it was
going to sack a third of its 60 members. The strike forced the cancellation of
the planned performance of Berlioz’s The Trojans – The Capture of Troy
at the Coliseum Theatre in London. Chorus members have already staged a protest
by singing in a whisper during a recent dress rehearsal, and say they intend to
disrupt other performances throughout the opera season to draw attention to
their plight.
