The European directive on staff consultation has been
adopted by the European Parliament
The new rules will oblige companies to inform and consult
with employees on matters relating to the employment situation and company
developments.
Elspeth Attwooll, Liberal Democrat MEP for Scotland says the
legislation is long overdue in the UK as most European countries have had this
type of legislation in for years.
Companies with more than 150 employees will have three years
to implement the changes after it is drafted into UK law.
Companies with between 100 and 150 employees will have eight
years and companies with between 50 and 100 employees nine years.

Attwooll says that it is unlikely the new rules will apply
to smaller UK companies.
