Explorers give up bear necessities to polar poacher

Nigel Godbolt, HR director at logistics firm Ryder, will be back at his desk this week, a little tired and frostbitten, but proud of achieving third place in the Polar Challenge. His team reached the magnetic North Pole in 11 days 22 hours and 40 minutes.

During the trek, the team had to deal with white-out conditions, arctic storms and encounters with polar bears who stole the team’s food bag.

Despite eating 7,500 calories a day, Godbolt lost 10% of his bodyweight as the team skied the 320 nautical miles, towing sledges weighing more than 120 pounds, for 14 to 18 hours daily.

The team raised more than £10,000 to be split between two charities – Diabetes UK and the Anthony Nolan Trust.
