The
Mayor of London has introduced a fair employment clause for contracting staff
working for the Greater London Authority.
This
will mean that staff working for contractors will have the same pay and
conditions as Greater London Authority employees.
Ken
Livingstone said, “London needs top quality public services provided by
properly paid and motivated staff. A
fair employment clause will assist this by ensuring that outsourcing is not
used as a way to drive down employees’ pay and conditions.”
The
move by Livingstone has been welcomed by Dave Prentis, general secretary of
Unison, who said, “We will be calling on other public authorities to follow the
GLA’s example. The next step is for government to follow the GLA’s lead and
legislate for a fair employment clause to be included in all contracts so that
all workers are protected.”
