The
leader of the firefighters’ union is trying to convince union members to accept
a 16 per cent pay deal.
According
to reports in the Evening Standard Andy Gilchrist has personally endorsed the
offer and will put the offer before a meeting of representatives in three
weeks.

The
deal will give firefighters a basic salary of £25,000 a year basic by July
2004, but hardline members of the union are disappointed because the offer
falls far short of the original demand for a 40 per cent rise and
£30,000-a-year basic rate.
