Franchised car dealers now earn an average of more than £60,000 a year, according to industry research group Sewells.
But the annual survey of pay and conditions in the industry also recorded below UK average rises in basic and total pay across 22,555 franchised dealer staff.
According to official figures, average earnings excluding bonuses rose by 3.6% in the year to January 2007.
But staff only enjoyed average increases of 2.3% in basic pay.

The highest paid franchise was once again BMW, followed by Jaguar and Land Rover.
