Johnson, new work and pensions secretary, replaced
Andrew Smith after his surprise resignation last week. Johnson, former joint
secretary of the Communication Workers Union, is the first former union leader
to become a Cabinet minister in 40 years. He is said to be regarded as ideal to
manage the Government’s links with the unions.
