The CBI believes there is a case
for improved enforcement of the UK’s laws on redundancy consultation following
Marks & Spencer’s failure to consult over its decision to close its French
operation.
Simon Blake, policy
adviser at the CBI, said the UK’s approach to consultation might need
fine-tuning, but the European directive on the issue should still be resisted.

He said, "I don’t
think there is a strong case for changing the law because the differences
between UK and French law are procedural. But I do think there is a case for
better enforcement of the laws we already have."
