London’s
public sector staff should be paid up to a third more than those elsewhere to
compensate for the cost of living in the capital, according to an independent
panel.
The
London Weighting Panel, set up by the London Assembly, has recommended rises of
37 per cent for public sector staff in London following a six month
investigation.
It
also suggested that London weighting in the public sector should be set by
comparison with private employers, as all workers face the same extra costs by
living in the capital.
The
panel comprised of members from public, private, trade union and academic
bodies and was chaired by Bill Knight.
