The
Government is set to impose a compulsory pay deal on firefighters.
Deputy
Prime Minister, John Prescott, will introduce a new Fire Service Bill that will
force a 16 per cent pay increase on the firefighters.
Prescott
said that Parliament would be "astonished" that the 16 per cent pay
increase by July 2004 taking basic firefighter pay to £25,000 a year had been
rejected.
"I
have concluded that time has come for legislation – particularly given the
conflict in the Gulf and the heightened threat of terrorism," said
Prescott.

"I
think people will find it extraordinary and unacceptable that at a time our
troops are being called in to action that firefighters should act in an
irresponsible way."
