The morning family chat over the breakfast table must be somewhat different
in the Burtoft household. In fact one can imagine the conversation could become
quite heated following publication of the latest NHS guidelines. Jane Burtoft,
who is the new HR director for the Leeds service, has married her partner of 17
years who, you’ve guessed it, also works in NHS HR. She married last September
on the Acropolis in Lindos, Rhodes – where presumably all talk of hospitals,
NHS plans and HR wasn’t on the agenda.

Burtoft joins from the Hull and East Yorkshire Trust, where she held
strategic and operational responsibility for the 6,000 workforce.

She will be key in ensuring HR supports organisational change. "My post
is a new role in the trust and my main responsibilities will be all HR issues
including organisational development and management development as well as the
corporate responsibility of being part of the trust board," she says.

Her favourite part of HR is working with people to deliver culture change
and she hopes to support staff to do things differently and achieve effective
modernisation. "I hope people will say that the HR directorate has made a
tangible difference to the achievement of the organisation’s objectives and has
therefore helped to deliver an improved experience for our service users,"
she adds.

On the move

Gerry Gibbon is the new head of
employment relations at GNER. Based in York, Gibbon will be responsible for
identifying the organisational development needs of the firm’s 3,000 staff. He
joins from food chain Greggs where he was group personnel manager with
responsibility for 12,000 staff. He has also worked for British Leyland and
Komatsu. Gibbon is the chairman of the North East CBI training and education
committee.

Deloitte & Touche has recruited
partner Jeffrey Alderton to its human capital practice, transferring him from
the same department in the US. Alderton will lead the HR strategy division and
will be responsible for developing the firm’s European human capital practice.
He has inter-national experience and expertise in human capital transformation
work.

International manufacturing and software company Global
Graphics has appointed Stuart Midgley as HR director and general manager. He
will be responsible for the company’s UK production and administrative
functions. In addition, he will look after group-wide HR in the UK, France,
Italy and the US. Previously Midgley, who is a law graduate with an MBA from
Bradford, was an HR consultant specialising in employment law, employee
relations and compensation and benefits. He has also held senior positions in
Yorkshire Building Society and IMI.
