Tony Pettengell is entertaining, but wrong (Off Message, Personnel Today, 16 January). If HR practitioners are not taken seriously when they say “people are our greatest asset”, it’s not because they recognise that employees make the difference between success and failure. It is because they haven’t bothered to go beyond the rhetoric and back up their claims with substance.
The challenge organisations face today is to make the best use of their only asset which – unlike technology – is not a commodity the one that designed and built the inventions we rely on in the first place. People remain our greatest asset.
