Regional focus: Manchester

Manchester is proving a popular place to relocate to. Despite the downturn there are still opportunities for HR professionals, and the city is a vibrant, cosmopolitan place to live and work.


Manchester is now firmly on the map, recognised as one of Europe’s premier business locations. Home to 2,000 internationally owned companies, Manchester has a real mixture of industries and a large public sector presence, which is proving a popular option for HR professionals and jobseekers alike, as it is perceived to offer greater job security.


We have seen recruitment for HR professionals in Manchester pick up slightly over the past few months. Interestingly, we are also seeing an increase in the number of applicants willing to relocate from outside Manchester. Strong candidates are still finding work; it just takes a little longer and is a little harder.


We are seeing steady demand for HR consultancy roles in the city, and those professionals with redundancy and redeployment experience continue to be in particular demand. There is a shortage of reward specialists and equality and diversity officers in Manchester, meaning that those professionals with the right skillset are likely to find new work with ease, even in the current market. Training and development recruitment has remained steady, as employers are currently looking to up-skill their employees in the hope of retaining the best talent. A candidate at an entry level position in Manchester can expect to earn around £14,000-£16,000 and an HR director can expect to earn around upwards of £60,000.


Professionals living and working in Manchester tend to live within an hour or less of their work, making it easy for them to have a good work-life balance. Manchester has more than 90 museums and art galleries, as well as great opportunities for shopping, eating, drinking and nightlife. And within half an hour’s drive lies some stunning countryside.
