Secretary
of state for trade and industry Patrica Hewitt has announced the appointment of
a new director general of research councils (DGRC).
Professor
Sir Keith O’Nions will succeed Dr John Taylor as Director General of Research Councils
on 1 January 2004, initially on a part-time basis.
O’Nions
is currently working as the chief scientific adviser at the Ministry of Defence.

Announcing
the appointment Hewitt said: "The director general of research councils
plays a vital part in realising the Government’s strategy for science,
engineering and technology. I am delighted that someone of Sir Keith’s stature
will succeed Dr John Taylor as DGRC."
