Shop workers’ union Usdaw is calling for the statutory
minimum wage to be applied to 16 to 21 year olds following Labour’s landslide
victory.
“We shall now press the Government to implement the
recommendations of the Low Pay Commission, which is to pay the full adult rate
at 21, as a first step towards achieving Usdaw’s policy of full pay at 18, with
proportionate rates for 16 and 17 year olds,” said general secretary Bill
Connor.
Usdaw will also continue to campaign for a ban on large
stores opening on Christmas Day.
“We would now like the Government to introduce its own Bill
to outlaw Christmas Day trading,” said Connor.
