The
Government is putting skills on an equal footing with academic education, with
the new minister in charge putting his weight behind the Sector Skills Councils
(SSC).
Addressing
the first ever employer-led UK skills convention, held in Manchester, the Secretary
of State for Education and Skills, Charles Clarke, said the Government fully
supported the sectoral approach to building skills and driving up productivity.
"The
message I want to send as strongly as I possibly can is that the Government
sees skills as absolutely central to our education strategy in this country.
And I say this coming new to this job, not just on behalf of myself, but on
behalf of the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer," he
said.
