The
body that represents the audio visual industry, Skillset, has been awarded the
first official licence of a Sector Skills Council (SSC).
John
Healey, the minister for adult skills, formally handed the licence to Skillset
and pledged £1m a year to help raise skills in the sector:
"Skillset
can now officially start leading the drive to boost skills and workforce
development in the audio visual industries in its new enhanced role. I know it
will set an example to other employment sectors in providing tangible benefits
to the industry it serves," he said. "I want it to identify the
skills needed and provide a clear action plan to tackle them. I’m looking
forward to Skillset working with government to influence education and training
provision so they better fit the demand of the industry."
The
organisation’s first two major initiatives will be the launch of a dedicated
career advice helpline and a skills investment fund for film trainees.
Skillset
is one of the five organisations selected as a trailblazer SSC to provide an
example to other industry bodies hoping to gain SSC status.
