The TUC has called on the Government to end its opposition to the draft European directive on information and consultation at the Nice summit of the European Council.
It claims that too often British employers keep their staff in the dark over job cuts and closures. Elsewhere in Europe employers are forced by law to talk to their workforce about planned closures or mergers.
The draft directive would give 65 per cent of the UK workforce the right to be consulted on issues such as mergers, re-organisations and redundancies.
The draft directive would impose heavy penalties for employers that failed to go through a proper process of employee consultation.
