The
TUC annual conference has passed a motion demanding employer contributions to
occupational pension schemes.
It
also called for membership of a pension scheme to be a condition of employment.
The
gathering noted that: "Congress deplores the retreat by employers from
providing quality final pension salary schemes for employees."
The
motion was passed as the Government released a discussion document that floats
the idea of introducing money purchasing schemes in local government instead
of final salary scheme – regarded by
many in sector as its biggest recruitment and retention tool.

Brendan
Barber, deputy general secretary at the TUC said that employers are wrong to
cut pensions because "pensions are a deferred part of the pay
package."
