Teaching union stalwart cuts short tenure

The
general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, the third
largest teaching union, has announced he is to retire three years early.

Peter
Smith will leave the post at the end of the year despite being due to finish in
2005.

His
decision was announced at the TUC conference in Blackpool.

Smith
has been general secretary for more than a decade and began working for the
union in 1974.

He
said working almost 30 years in the same organisation was long enough.
