The
head of the shopworkers union has welcomed the competition commission’s
decision to clear the way for a merger between supermarket chains Morrisons and
Safeway.
Sir
Bill Connor, general secretary of Usdaw which represents around 34,000 staff at
both companies, said the Morrisons bid offered the best deal for employees.
"We
have worked closely with Morrisons and Safeway for a number of years. We always
felt the proposed merger of the two was in the best interests of our members.
This has been an unsettling time and it’s important to bring the merger to a
final conclusion," he said.
The
nine-month saga now looks closer to being resolved although a final decision on
all the bids is now awaited.
