The Scottish Trade Union Congress (STUC) has formed a working group to
examine working conditions in Scotland’s expanding call centre industry.
Call centres currently employ about30,000 people in Scotland but concerns
have been raised by employees about the working conditions in some centres.
STUC assistant secretary, Tracey White, said, "There are a number of health
and safety regulations which are relevant to call centres. For example, we need
to make sure that workers who are operating a computer are given regular
breaks."

The STUC is working with the Call Centre Association on ways to improve
overall standards in the industry and White emphasised that they are keen to
work with good employers and expose bad ones.
The STUC will be running a high-profile campaign to raise awareness of some
of the problems associated with working in these centres.
