At the end of his book, author Steve Miller says he has attempted to give an overview of practical strategies to individuals to sell themselves. The book succeeds in this and gives insight into the world of influencing through self-preparation.
The title of the book is apt, as its roots are based in the world of sales. It explains the use of self-hypnosis and other techniques to help prepare yourself to influence others in a variety of situations.
Some of the techniques are familiar from neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) texts, and there are also some self-hypnosis exercises, accompanied by explanations and examples. These are simple techniques that work.
What I like is the mixture of self-hypnosis, psychology, NLP and assertiveness, coupled with advice and self-assessment exercises. The programme of exercises helps you find ways of changing your behaviour, your thoughts, and also your appearance to help in different life and career situations. The writing is fluent and low on jargon. There are some useful models and case studies to help understanding.
The layout of the book is confusing and better use of space, headings and indexing would have been a great help. For example, the first chapter, ‘The ground rules and understanding the concept’, is actually written earlier on in the book as part of the introduction. All of this gives an impression of a book which has been hurriedly put together, and a second edition would benefit from a more structured approach.
However, this is a valuable resource and a book I will refer to and dip into again – the challenge will be finding the bit I want.
