Up to 250 refuse workers in Brighton and Hove have started a week-long strike today following a pay dispute.

The council employees stopped work at 5.30am in protest at changes to their pay which a union claims could see each worker lose up to £8,000 in wages.

The GMB union warned that further planned stoppages could see no waste collected in Brighton and Hove this month, the BBC reported.

A statement from Brighton and Hove City council said: "The council has comprehensive plans to deal with any ongoing disruption to waste services and we would implement those should it become necessary."

Last week 96% of GMB members voted in favour of taking industrial action.
