Sussex University teachers and researchers to strike over job cuts and lecturing changes

University of Sussex teachers and researchers are set to hold a one-day strike today (18 March) in response to proposed redundancies and lecturing changes.

Members of the University and College Union (UCU) are angry at the university’s plans to make 115 people redundant and end the research of English social history before 1700 and European history before 1900, the Times Higher Education has reported.

The university is making the cutbacks in response to nationwide funding cuts announced by the government.

King’s College London, University College London and the universities of Kent and Westminster may also take industrial action following ballots that are scheduled or under way.

However, a strike at Leeds was called off after the university announced members accepted a deal.

Speaking about Sussex, Sally Hunt, UCU general secretary, said: “We have made it quite clear from the start of the current crisis that any institution that fears that job losses are a possibility needs to sit down with the unions to explore all possibilities.”
