Scottish law graduate alleges age discrimination

A Scottish law graduate has launched an age discrimination case against a law firm which rejected him for a job.

Andrew McSorley claimed that law firms insist on employing freshly qualified lawyers, rather than older people with more experience. McSorley claimed that his job applications have been rejected because he is a 37-year-old man, and said that it took representatives of Tods Murray, the first law firm he is taking on, three letters to explain why they had rejected him.

Tods Murray said that they turned him down because he does not have a 2.1 degree, a requirement that they said was clearly displayed on their website.

McSorley, who gained a Bachelor of Law diploma through a fast-track course, aims to use statistics to prove that he was unfairly rejected.

Employment judge Victor Craig will decide whether to hear his case in full.
