Phillips’ leadership makes equalities commission a laughing stock

Trevor Phillips has made the equalities watchdog a “laughing stock” according to a leading disabilities campaigner.

Brian Rix, the president of disabilities charity Mencap, has joined the chorus of voices calling for Phillip’s resignation from the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

Six commissioners have now resigned in protest at Phillips’ leadership, including Bert Massey, the former chair of the Disability Rights Commission, which was merged into the new quango.

Rix told the BBC: “I suppose you can truthfully say that Trevor has made a mess of things. The commission now is a bit of a laughing stock.”

Both the Commons Communities Committee and the Joint Human Rights Committee are considering questioning Phillips about his leadership, according to the Telegraph.

Last week, it emerged that the EHRC had re-hired seven of Phillips’ former colleagues at the Commission for Racial Equality on inflated salaries without demanding they repay large voluntary redundancy packages.
