Prison officers end suspension walk-out

Prison officers have returned to work at six jails in Yorkshire, following a walk-out over the suspension of two colleagues yesterday.

About 400 staff initially walked out at Lindholme and Moorlands prisons near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, and at Everthorpe jail in East Yorkshire, when a meeting with unions broke down.

They were followed by an additional 600 staff from three other prisons – New Hall, Wakefield and Wetherby in West Yorkshire.

The Prison Officers’ Association (POA) said the two officers had been suspended for remarks made during a disciplinary hearing into the dismissal of a female officer.

The officers agreed to return to work after the Prison Service said it would review the suspensions.

In January, the government announced proposals to re-introduce powers to ban strikes by prison officers in England and Wales.
