NHS staff flout smoking ban

Staff at many NHS hospitals continue to flout the smoking ban, a study has found. Researchers at Nottingham University visited 15 trusts and reported patients and visitors smoking at 94% of them and staff smoking at 35% on a daily basis, despite the smoke-free policy at all NHS hospital trusts.

College manager strain

College managers are struggling with excessive workloads and high stress levels, according to a survey by the Association for College Management. The union’s survey of member working habits found that while two in three were working more than the national average of a 48-hour week, only 4% had signed an opt-out allowing them to do so.

Royal Mail health drive

Royal Mail has launched two schemes to improve the health of its 180,000-strong workforce. An online health assessment will let staff analyse their lifestyles and design improvement plans by accessing information on a range of areas. The organisation is also recruiting health trainers.

Specialist welfare-to-work firms could soon be providing employers with HR services for the long-term unemployed they place in work, according to a key government adviser. David Freud, whose report kick-started the government’s radical welfare reforms, said providers could now be more innovative, possibly providing HR services to smaller businesses.
