Construction sector’s poor management of training costing millions

Poor management of training costs the UK construction industry tens of millions of pounds.

This could hit £77m by 2010, according to Lancaster software firm AccessPlanit, which said its figures are based on recent telephone-based research into construction industry companies’ training spend.

In particular, it said that “inefficient” monitoring of staff to check if they have CSCS (Construction Skills Certificate Scheme) cards could be costing the industry £19m annually. These cards prove that holders have completed health and safety training.

“Training management is just one of the many hidden costs the construction industry has been forced to bear during the last decade,” said AccessPlanit managing director Bill Evans. “Failure to meet training requirements goes far beyond lack of workforce competency.

“Up–to–date health and safety training reduces absenteeism and keeps organisations away from tribunals.
