Francois Volpi has been appointed director of HR for the wholesale and commercial affairs division of pharmaceuticals and retail company Alliance Boots. He joins from IT company Hewlett-Packard. Volpi will report to Joerg Boder, director of divisional management.

Professor David Melville, vice-chancellor of the University of Kent and former Further Education Funding Council chief executive, has taken over as the new chair of Lifelong Learning UK, which represents employers in lifelong learning across the country.
