Employers need to spell out new age legislation

Employers need to work harder to raise awareness of the upcoming age legislation among their employees, according to the findings of a major report.

The study of 2,100 employers and 700 staff by recruitment firm Manpower reveals that almost three-quarters (72%) of organisations believe their employees are at least aware of the new laws. However, more than half of workers (51%) claim to be totally unaware of them.

The Old Age Thinking/New Age Thinking report also reveals that employers expect the laws to stimulate a wider age range among jobseekers – with one-third (33%) anticipating more applications from people over 50.

Most large organisations (82%) have already reviewed their HR practices ahead of the introduction of the age laws on 1 October. This has ranged from conducting an age profile workforce audit, to changes to HR policy and recruitment advertising.
