Vauxhall axes 900 jobs at Ellesmere Port plant

UK car manufacturer Vauxhall is to axe 900 jobs as part of a productivity review at its Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire.

Company officials unveiled the proposal when it met with union representatives from Amicus and the Transport and General Workers’ Union this morning.

Union fears that one of the three shifts at the plant would be axed were confirmed after Vauxhall announced the changes – cutting almost a third of the workforce.

Amicus general secretary Derek Simpson described the move as “another devastating blow to the car industry and UK manufacturing in general”.
