BA pilots threaten strike action over potential pension changes

British Airways has been warned that its 2,800 pilots may decide to strike over plans to alter its pension scheme.

The British Airline Pilots Association said it would fight any plans to make its members pay for a huge deficit of more than £1bn in the company’s final salary pension scheme.

General secretary Jim McAuslan has written to pilots warning that the situation had become “serious”.

BA should honour its “pledge” to the workforce to continue paying the final salary scheme and not ask pilots to increase their contributions, he said.

The airline is currently consulting with its 46,000 employees over potential changes. Chief executive Willie Walsh described the current situation “not sustainable”.
