Kineo and Royal Yachting Association plot course for e-learning success

by Personnel Today 16 Feb 2011
by Personnel Today 16 Feb 2011

Kineo and Royal Yachting Association have worked closely together to create a suite of bespoke, high end e-learning modules on navigation and water safety.  The design approach taken and a sample module are shared in a new case study on the Kineo website this week.

The RYA (Royal Yachting Association) is the national body for all forms of boating, providing information and advice, as well as courses and training. Their courses are currently conducted face-to-face and usually over a number of days. However, the need to deliver them internationally, while ensuring consistency across how the courses are rolled out, meant that they had to consider a different learning approach.

RYA chose Kineo, leaders in taking a fresh approach to e-learning design, to create a high quality and engaging e-learning set of modules. They had to appeal to a broad range of people, doing a wide range of water-based activities, from jet skiing to yachting.

This case study explains how Kineo worked with RYA to create a high end piece of bespoke, highly visual and interactive e-learning. The solution includes phased sections to build the learner’s knowledge in short focused sections, give them an opportunity to apply it in a safe environment with feedback, and then a final test to prove their capabilities.

The material called for a rich media approach, complete with high quality animations explaining concepts including tidal systems, videos and voiceover to get the complex concepts across in an easy to understand way.

RYA’s training manager Jane Hall said: “This was not an easy project, but Kineo’s expertise in learning and graphic design, teamed with our instructors’ knowledge of the subject meant that we have ended up with a course to be proud of. The hard work was worth it and the feedback from students and instructors so far has been great.”
