More than 8,000 drivers, warehouse and support staff at Morrisons’ distribution depots across the UK are to vote in a strike ballot.
The Transport & General Workers’ Union (T&G) and GMB today confirmed that they have given the statutory seven days notice to the supermarket chain after failing to get a positive response to their demand for national bargaining.
“The merger of Safeway operations into Morrisons has caused no end of problems for our members,” said Brian Revell, T&G national organiser for food and agriculture.
“We believe the best way to deal with the situation would be to stop being in denial, as Morrisons appears to be, and agree to work with the unions to provide a national framework so we can address issues collectively.”
Jude Brimble, GMB national officer said: “Our members have had enough of the ‘Morrision Way’. They were happy under the Safeway management, but cannot abide the chaotic Morrisons style.”

The strike ballot will be run from Wednesday 10 August and a result is expected on 31 August.
Morrisons bought Safeway for £3bn last year.
