Right experience is key to good management

Relevant job experience has been cited as the most important element in a good manager, according to a survey by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

For the first time since 1986, ‘innate ability’ was knocked off the top spot in the survey as the most popular response to the question: ‘what makes a good manager?’

The survey of 1,000 managers also shows that employers are taking on far more responsibility for management and leadership development than they did in the past, with senior involvement steadily climbing since 1996.

The survey also shows that the most effective forms of development are those directly connected to managers’ experiences in the workplace.

More than half of the HR managers surveyed cited training courses as the most effective form of development, compared with only 24 per cent of line managers, who rated on-the-job development as the best way to learn.
