Employees
in the UK receive some of the lowest minimum payments after being made
redundant, according to research.
Minimum
redundancy payments vary hugely across Europe, with some EU countries offering
more than five times that of others.
Research
by Mercer shows that France, the Netherlands and the UK have the lowest levels,
while Spain, Italy, Belgium and Austria are the most generous.
The
comparisons are based on minimum statutory paid notice and severance pay for a
white-collar employee aged 40, made redundant after 10 years on a salary of
£20,000.

Based
on this example the average redundancy pay across the EU after 10 years’
service would be £11,163, compared to just £5,128 in the UK.
