Jobs schemes among those cut by the government

Job schemes are among those affected by the government’s scrapping of £10.5bn worth of projects.

According to the Guardian, the introduction of the Future Jobs Fund, part of the Young Person’s Guarantee to 2011-12, and the two-year jobseekers guarantee have been cut, saving the government £995m. Both schemes were aimed at helping guarantee work or training for the long-term unemployed.

Shadow work and pensions secretary Yvette Cooper said: “This shows the Tory-Liberal government clearly thinks unemployment is a price worth paying…it will cost us far more in the long term in higher unemployment benefits and damage to our communities.”

A Treasury spokesman said the schemes would be replaced by a new Single Work Programme. The government could not say how it would operate, or how much it would cost.
