UK’s working dads prevented from sharing childcare

Working fathers in Britain are not being given enough flexibility by their
employers to help meet childcare commitments.

A report by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) found UK dads do
approximately a third of all childcare, but are far less likely to work
flexible hours.

It also finds that nearly two-fifths work more than 48 hours a week, while
one in 8 work 60 hours. It claims the situation is hindering an equal sharing
of care.

EOC chairwoman Julie Mellor said employers should promote family-friendly
policies, and that work-life balance had clear business benefits.

Eight out of 10 employers said work-life balance was good for employment
relations, retention, commitment and improved motivation, but more than half of
those questioned did not offer any form of flexible working.
