Despite
the potential problems that could be thrown up by the EC directive on temporary
workers, the majority of UK companies are still employing temporary and
contract staff and the rate of at which they are being used is actually
increasing.
David Chorley International (DCI), a
recruitment consultancy for the banking and financial services sector,
questioned 950 heads of divisions, line managers and HR personnel.
More than 80 per cent of respondents admit to
using ‘floating’ staff, with 30 per cent increasing the number of staff on a
temporary or contract basis compared to 2001. Â
Almost two-thirds of those surveyed say the
main reason is heavy workload, with half the temporary workers employed to work
on special projects.
