Jobs
are just as likely to be gained through personal contacts as they are from
replying to advertisements. Labour Market Trends August 2002 reveals that
nearly one-third of people who secured jobs during the winter of 2001/2002
heard about the positions through existing employees, and a similar proportion
did so through job adverts.
The
research, which draws its results from the National Statistics’ Labour Force
Survey, also shows significant differences between the way men and women secure
jobs.
Women
are more likely to be successful replying to adverts, with 31 per cent gaining
jobs in this way compared with 25 per cent of men. Men are more likely to use
contacts, with 30 per cent securing jobs through ‘inside’ information, compared
with 25 per cent of women.
