A
survey claiming that one in 10 hospital patients picks up an infection has been
received sceptically by infection control nurses. The survey, commissioned by
infection control products manufacturers Antec International, also found that
one in four patients believed that cleanliness is not important to hospital
staff.

Foundation
hospitals

The
introduction of foundation hospitals has prompted union concern about pay
disputes, low staff morale and patient care problems in non-foundation
hospitals. Concerns were expressed by staff and management representatives
after health secretary Alan Milburn announced the introduction of the scheme
for the end of next year.

The
NHS now has more managers than beds, according to Conservative Party leader
Iain Duncan Smith. The Tory chief accused Prime Minister Tony Blair of failing
to improve health service efficiency. "The NHS now has 210,000 managers
but fewer than 200,000 beds," he said.
