Police mentoring scheme will fast-track high-flyers

Future
leaders of the Police Service are to be identified and mentored through a new
government scheme.

Those
on the High Potential Development Scheme will receive training designed to
maximise leadership potential, supported through any necessary academic
qualifications.

They
will be mentored by police training and career experts to give support as
officers progress through their career.

Once
they pass the scheme’s rigorous selection process, potential candidates from
both outside the service and serving police officers, will be fast-tracked to
top posts – some as high as Chief Constable.

The
Government’s radical reform proposals set out in the Police Reform White Paper
and Bill aim to put in place better training to support police officers to help
them achieve the highest standards of performance.

 Home Office Minister John Denham said:
"We are looking for the brightest people to step forward for this scheme
so that we can train the future leaders and senior officers that the service
needs to meet the challenges of 21st Century policing."

The
HPD scheme will support candidates over a six-year period and aims to attract
approximately 100 candidates a year
