£1.5m pay-out in sex bias case

A City analyst has received almost £1.5m in compensation after an employment
tribunal criticised her former employer Schroder Securities for having a
‘laddish and sexist’ culture.

Julie Bower was granted the award on the grounds of sexual discrimination
after it was revealed her bonus of £25,000 was only a fraction of that earned
by male colleagues.

Bower was forced to resign from her job in 1999 while she was fighting
ovarian cancer.

Tribunal chairwoman Vivian Gay criticised Schroder for a lack of
transparency in its bonus system and its male-dominated culture, which included
visits to lap dancing clubs.

An appeal by Schroder will be heard in June.
